Bunny Burkett death – dead, obituary, funeral plans: Lady drag racer Bunny Burkett passed away April 4, 2020 peacefully and unexpectedly in her sleep.
Her first race was at Old Dominion Dragstrip in Manassas Va. in 1964. She struggled being able to afford to run full schedules so in 1967, Caroline got a job as a hostess at the playboy club in Baltimore to help earn some extra money to continue racing…. and that is how she earned the name “Bunny”.
Her first championship came in 1986 and was crowned IHRA Alcohol Finny Car Champion!! She was definitely a first class racer, and up to last year, she still played a huge part in drag racing community helping different charities raise money through racing!

It’s with great sadness that we share this news.
Bunny passed away peacefully and unexpectedly in her sleep April 4th, 2020.
The family plans to have a celebration of life later this year when it is safe for all to attend.
We are sad that she made it to the finish line first, but we ALL know she’d have had it no other way.
We will keep you all informed of our plans.
Until then, remember, Bunny NEVER followed the beaten path … she made her own.
God Bless you all and watch for those burnouts in the sky!
Drag Racing legend Carol “Bunny” Burkett began racing in the 1960s and continued to operate a team with drivers until last season.
She was one of a handful of women competitors in drag racing when she competed. She also became just the second woman at the time to win a championship in a professional class in 1986, behind Shirley Muldowney.
She competed in the NHRA and the IHRA.
Burkett is the godmother of Capco Contractors clutch guy Gary Pritchett, who even competed in Burkett’s Funny Cars in 2019 in Maryland at Maryland International Raceway.
Carol Burkett accident:
Bunny overcame a serious racing accident in September 1995 that nearly ended her racing career. The incident happened when Carl Ruth’s Funny Car crossed the center lined and caused her to crash into the guardrail.
Please say a prayer for her grieving family as you read the tributes below:
Rest in Peace Bunny Burkett..Passed away on 4/2/2020
Very nice lady. I met her at Virginia Motorsports Park in 1999.
She was a heck of a racer for sure.
Sad news coming on Saturday March 4th of the passing of drag racing legend Carol “Bunny” Burkett.
It is with heavy heart that we must relate that we lost Bunny Burkett yesterday. She was inducted into the Legion of Honor in 2010. Drag racing was a better community because of her. She may be gone but she will never be forgotten. God bless you Bunny!
